Barranco is Lima’s bohemian and artistic neighborhood. In the 19th century it was a summer resort for wealthy families from the city, who built elegant mansions near the sea. Today it is home to artists, writers, galleries, cafés and some of the best restaurants and bars in Lima.
The Bridge of Sighs
The Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs) is the symbol of Barranco. This small wooden bridge crosses a narrow ravine that leads down to the beach. According to legend, if you cross it for the first time while holding your breath, your wish will come true.
Colorful mansions and street art
Walking through Barranco, you will see restored republican-era mansions painted in bright colors, and dozens of murals by Peruvian street artists. The area around the Bridge of Sighs and Calle Domeyer is especially rich in street art.
Museums and galleries
Barranco has several art spaces, such as the MATE, the museum of the photographer Mario Testino, and the MAC, Lima’s Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as many small galleries.
The Bajada de Baños
Next to the bridge, the Bajada de Baños is an old stone path that leads down to the beach, lined with trees and small restaurants. It is a pleasant walk to watch the sunset over the Pacific.
